  • Sketchbook – 07-MAY-2011

Here are my sketches from today’s figure drawing.  I busted out the watercolors again.  It must be the sun out that encouraged it.  After so many years of drawing with the same group of people, its wonderful to see the figurative arts community solidifying and growing. I’ve had an ongoing conversation with one of the…

  • Sketchbook – 30-APR-2011

Some sketches from figure drawing this weekend.  Life kept me from the easel for the past couple of weeks so it felt great to stretch the eye muscles again. My favorite part of this pose was the tension on his back foot.  I think I would have been satisfied if I just drew that foot.…

  • Sketchbook – 16-MAR-2011

I took a break during a rainy day today at lunch to do some sketching.  This is a page of random sketches at 5th Street Public Market.  Restaurants are always a great place to do spontaneous portraits of people.  I also always seem to get caught up in the space, the wiring hanging from the ceiling…

  • Figure Drawing – 12-FEB-2011

Recent drawings from this weekend. I’ve really been focusing on line lately.  Not just weight, but particularly direction.  Line that follows form builds form.  Cross-hatching or mono-directional lines flatten a drawing.  I’ve been experimenting with both.  Flat tones make for a stronger graphic image, but I really like the sculpted form of a drawing.  I’ve…

    Digital figure drawing

Below are some of my latest experiments. I took my iPad to my weekly figure drawing session. I’ve really wanted to experiment with figure painting, but the sessions are much too short for that. So, I figured I would play with drawing on the iPad. What is most interesting to me is how foreign it…

  • An afternoon with my son

Through a series of circumstances during Christmas shopping, I got to enjoy a quiet couple of hours with my son at a local coffee shop. He was contented with coloring while eating grapes.  I was contented with drawing in my sketchbook with a cup of hot chocolate.  Few moments are this memorable. Nate coloring dinosaurs My favorite…

July 29-31, I participated in the first annual Urban Sketchers International Symposium.  About 70 illustrators, architects and artists from around the world came to Portland, Oregon for 3 days of intense drawing and painting marathons.  Every day and discussed and/or participated in drawing and painting in an urban environment.  The seminars I participated in included…

  • Happy Accident

The scheduled model for my life drawing session last weekend had to leave early because he wasn’t feeling well.  Rather than send everyone home, the host responsible for the life drawing session offered to sit for us…clothed.  I had a lot of fun with the texture, folds, and shadows of the clothing.  Below are the…
