A Tradition of Beauty

Figurative art is a tradition dating back thousands of years. What you may not realize is that it is a tradition that is alive and well today. Sculpture is everywhere around us; its beauty and elegance enriches our environment. Look around you at the backgrounds of movies, the fountains at the hotel you are staying at, or the portraits in your library.

My Studio

I specialize in figurative and portrait art, building on a four thousand year tradition of immortalizing humanity. I continue that noble tradition with my personal interpretation. It is often easy to take for granted that we are living with the same hopes, dreams, and fears that people thousands of years ago faced. Figurative art is the visual connection of my genealogy. I connect with ancient drawings and paintings through the empathy of self-recognition. My goal is to create work that can cause the viewer to recognize themselves in the reflections of others.

My work is a reflection of the innate beauty of the human figure. It is through moments of quiet reflection that I observe the passions of our daily life. Yet, I contrast repose with dynamic textures, belying the breath and passion of living people. My mediums are drawings in graphite, charcoal, and conte crayon; painting in watercolor, gouache, and oil; and sculpture in clay and bronze.

People have a wonderful way of personifying objects, whether they are clouds, trees, or machines. I see faces, hands, and bodies in non-human objects all around me. At what point when we look at an image do we recognize it as human? At what point when looking at the image of another do we see the reflection of ourselves? My current works are demonstrations of that transition, where an ambiguous line become an eye, where a white triangle becomes the highlight on a shoulder, where out of a square block emerges a face.

"You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget that errand." -- Woodrow Wilson.
